Up until now I've been using different threads to give small updates about the DVD. This is inconvenient for both you and I to gather all the information. Consequently, I've made this thread in order to inform and discuss all things relative to this DVD.
First things first. For the people who have not yet heard about this: My name is Mike and a few months ago I asked Noah if he would be cool with me touring with him on the three day tour last week in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York. He was psyched on the idea and tons of planning later, here we are. I plan on making a DVD release from the videos.
Here are the 60 minute tapes worth of footage I shot.
As of now this is the information I can provide regarding the DVD (anything missing is simply because I haven't thought of it yet. I don't intend to keep secrets or anything.) Everything in here is subject to change as I am truly doing this as I go with little planning and experience in editing.
• The Panda Bear DVD will contain a full performance from Panda Bear's set. I will take the audio from the best recording and then edit the three set's videos together to make one cohesive performance.
• The DVD will also contain sound checks, audience responses, a Panda Bear interview, and other random footage.
• I did shoot all of the opening band's performances. How I will provide them I am still deciding but I promise you, I will give everyone on this tour their due credit.
• The DVD will be available in a bunch of ways: as a physical DVD, a loseless video on my computer, and a compressed video on my computer. Also, all of the individual performances will be available on my computer.
• Now, I'm sure a lot of people are wondering about the cost. The greatest things in life aught to be free. Music is one of em. I have plenty of DVDs and shipping equipment thus, with great happiness I can say that this thing will be completely free. There is one slight problem I still need to get around. In order to film at the Bowery Ballroom, for one night, and for one camera, it was a $250 charge. I accept the charge and if I don't make that money back, thats fine. It was worth it to make this DVD that much better. However, I think I am going to create a BONUS disk that I will package along with this DVD. The disk will contain all three full sets, openers, and more footage or something. And for this disk I might ask a donation from $5-$10 on a sliding scale. Because all I need is for 25 people to pay $10 for the disk and I'll make my money back which would be righteous since I'm strapped for cash after this tour and after buying my new camera.
Phew. I seriously hate to talk money with music. Its depressing but thats how the world works, unfortunately.
So use this thread to post questions, comments, ideas, etc..
I'll leave you with a few screen grabs from what I began to capture.
Panda Bear- Philly
Queens* - Bowery Ballroom
Panda Bear - Bowery Ballroom
*I will refer to Scott Mou as Queens in this thread and DVD. I was curious why he wasn't calling himself Queens on this tour and he said that it was an error in promotion and that his performance should have been under the title of Queens. |

| damn dude, you rock. i'm definitely willing to give you ten bucks for a dvd, even tho i'd probably never even watch the whole thing (short attention span), still i'd take comfort in the fact that i was doing my small part in compensating someone as hard-working and generous as you. |

Aw shit, thanks guys. Its the least I could do to support such a great group of people (the forums and bands).
imcertainofcurtains, I understand exactly whatcha mean. I'm a firm believer that one person can help out a lot of people and I always try and do that.
That all said, I don't want people to think I made this thread/am doing this DVD so I can get my ass kissed. I believe this is all sincere thanks and I am truly greatful but in no way am I looking for a large amount of appreciation. |

Thats a good point.
By all means, do whatever you want with this video once you receive it. As long as credit is stuck in there somewhere, I'm cool.
I will figure out something to do to the DVDs to show they were the "authentic" originals produced by me so when Panda Bear is headlining festivals, people can sell these original DVD copies for thousands. haha |

If you're not already doing it yourself I'd love to design covers for it Once you know what is going to go on it exactly I can slap all the info on and people can print them out.
I could also put together a booklet as a pdf with pics, reviews etc. ? |

Wow, I knew you guys would be into this idea but not this much into it! Thank you so much for all of your generosity. Its looking like I'll be able to make this money back right away. As soon as I receive all of the necessary funds to make the Bowery money back I'm not sure what I'll do with the excess. I never intend to make any frivolous profit off of you guys. It would all definitely go to some good like paying back all of the shipping charges or at least helping me buy more DVDs when this is all said and done. And if that is all covered and I still get money, I might just give it to Paw Tracks or something to help support such a great label.
But all of this talk about how to order will lead me to my first
Update [06.26.07]:
Since I want this DVD sale to extend beyond just people on this board I think I'm going to create a new gmail account. Something like PandaDVD@gmail.com.
When someone would like to order the DVD they would shoot an email over there. As far as payment for the donations would go, I would accept any form. Paypal would be by far the easiest and best way to go about this. I already have a Paypal donation link on my website (eattapes.com) and people could just use that. Any other forms (money orders/checkes/concealled cash (at your own risk) could be sent to me.
In the email you would just say what your name is, if you donated, and your shipping address. I will check the email address nightly and get all orders packaged and shipped the next day. I will send you a response email saying when your DVD has been shipped. In that response order I'll also give you my shipping address if you need it to send your donation (like a check/money order/etc..). And yes, anyone from the boards who wants to donate using a money order or something that needs to be shipped, I do trust you and will ship out your DVD the next day so you won't have to wait for me to receive your donation first.
I know that is a lot of words and may be confusing. If you have any questions just say so and I can help you out along the way.
Oh, also. I will absolutely ship internationally. |

Who charged you $250 @ Bowery?
That seems odd, I've never really heard of that, did they think you were some promotor or something using this as a commerical or official release? It seems you were in the Balcony for the Bowery gig (I've never been there, don't even know if there is one but from the looks of that one screenshot you seemed higher up) and weren't able to get on stage or anything like you did at the Ottobar, my question is then, why didn't you just "stealth," it so to speak, or did they charge you an intial $250 once they searched your bag at the door and saw you had a big videocamera..
That seems really weird to me, I wonder what they do with Audio if that is the case..
I am also confused, will the DVD include all 3 full performances? Or a mashup of one set (I'm sure they were all very similiar) with all 3 dates?
Thanks. |

I just re-read the first page, and at least for me it would make more sense to release each show seperately (not sure about media/storage issues) and then make a mashup from the different dates. But if that is not possible, so be it.
PS - You gots some crazy hair man. Also, does your girlfriend go with you to every show? That would be fuckin' rad, but I wouldn't be able to leave my girlfriend there all the time when I was up shooting/camming (videoing is much more difficult that Audio in my opinion). Hell she gets mad enough when I am just AUD taping, I can't imagine Video..
Props. |

Thanks.
The Bowery charges $250 per camera to record. Their reasoning is that you use their venue as a backdrop and you use the venue's sound so they deserve some profit. I don't know. Thats bigger venue's weirdness for ya. So I payed the $250 in advance and received a video pass. I was able to go wherever I wanted, I chose to use the balcony, however. For each show I wanted a different angle so it would be more interesting to cut between all three in the final product.
And I am doing what you suggested, thierry. For the DVD I am compiling all of the videos to create one "super performance", if you will. And then, for the people who donate $5-$10 bucks (to help me payback the charge), I will provide a BONUS disk with all three full sets on them.
And I mean, its a fair question to ask about the Bowery thing. The charge is stupid to me too but I just accepted it. Although, I hope you weren't thinking that I am lying to everyone and am just looking to make money off of this. JFR of Excepter posts here and he had a similar problem when someone wanted to film his band at the Bowery.
And yea, my girlfriend has been going to shows with me since we started to go out. In fact, the afternoon I asked her to go out with me I had a show to see The Fiery Furnaces back in '05 and she came with. Shes great. And yea I do have crazy hair. |
